Internship and Apprenticeship
The opportunity for interns and apprentices is to absorb the essence of the four-fold nature of treatment in Chinese medicine. Specifically:
1/ To improve the practice of acupuncture as a physical art
Knowing the channels and points to a deeper level is essential to be effective in acupuncture. Bringing palpation skills to acupuncture also enhances both diagnosis and treatment efficacy.
2/ To work with the Qi body in acupuncture
When you practice acupuncture in the context of awareness of the Qi (something often significantly lacking in modern TCM interpretations of acupuncture) it is more effective for the patient, and way more interesting for the practitioner.
3/ To work with the Shen in the context of acupuncture treatment
This means that the mental and emotional component of illness is made conscious, and is an integral part of the treatment process. When this is integrated (and in TCM it is often excluded) you practice a deeper level of acupuncture healing.
4/ To work with the ancestors and the spiritual realm in the context of acupuncture treatment
The ancient knowledge of the influence of the ancestors and spiritual realm is largely overlooked and very useful in treatment.
There are often clinic times available when students can intern, observing patients and helping with treatments. In exchange for observing and assisting in the clinic, all classes are free to apprentices.
The clinical portion of your time can be used to fulfill externship clinical hours at Five Branches University.
Apprenticeship is a formalization of this learning process that enables the apprentice to become a licensed acupuncturist in California. Currently the apprenticeship positions are all taken.
